No transfer errors.
No manual.
Instructions are on inlay_b.
At least 4 versions of the program exist, on 3 different tapes:
Tape v1: very early Oric-1 only version.
From the outside, this early version doesn't even state that the program is for Oric!
The tape labels don't state the progam name, probably some early generic Loriciels labels.
Recorded once at slow speed on each side, only the game (no ads before, etc.)
Both sides programs are stricly identical (checked byte for byte).
The program is unprotected, with REMS in the listing crediting L. Benes. And... Lots of typos ;)
BUG: a bug in line 4340, if the lighter ("briquet") is ON, the game simply exits with ?SYNTAX ERROR
It also seems to have a small problem displaying the "Loriciels est fier de présenter" sentence on the Oric-1, according to INK and PAPER values (which are not set by the program to display this line). This was corrected in the later version.
Funny: instructions on the inlay even explain how to modify the program if the random lightning is too hard! Note that on later versions, this modification is actually applied!
Tape v2: later Oric-1 only version.
From the outside, this version still doesn't state that the program is for Oric.
The tape labels now state Oric-1, the program recording speed, and Loriciels' address: 17 rue Lamande 75017 Paris.
Recorded once at fast speed on a side, and once at slow speed on the other.
That's where things get complicated:
- the fast side has two parts, and the slow side three parts.
- the Loriciels ad screen is a bit different between both sides: the fast version has a date ("V11/83") on the Galaxion line
- the slow version still has the line 4340 bug! If the lighter ("briquet") is ON, the now protected game *crashes* with ?SYNTAX ERROR
- for the record, fast speed recording has an additional "!" after "Vous voici arrive dans le manoir du Dr Genius..."
Compared to the v1 version, lots of typos were corrected, and L. Benes' name has disappeared from the listing.
The game is also now protected.
The ink and paper are now set BEFORE displaying "Loriciels est fier de présenter".
The bug in line 4340 is corrected for the fast speed side only!
The tip to lower chances of having a lightning is now used in the listing. Hence, it disappeared from the inlay instructions!
Tape v3: Oric-1/Atmos version.
This version finally states on the inlay that the program is for Oric-1 or Atmos.
The tape labels now state "Oric/Atmos", the program recording speed, and Loriciels' address: 160 rue Legendre 75017 Paris.
Recorded once at fast speed on each side.
Both sides programs are stricly identical (checked byte for byte).
The game is now protected and encrypted, which prevents from seeing the listing inside the TAP file.
So it is now impossible to compare the listing with previous versions unless someone cracks the game.
Tape v2.5 ?
Look at genius_Vx_gl.jpg: it seems it's a V2 version, but only at fast speed according to the magnetic tape size.
So getting rid of the slow version, hence the bug from line 4340?
This picture was found somewhere on the Internet.

Thanks to Bernard Fermaut for the early version, to Laurent Lathiere for a 2nd copy 100% similar, and to Romain G. for the 2nd tape version.

A good adventure game I played a lot a very long time ago. Totally binary in the solution you will die many times, stupidly and unfairly. It was fun when I was kid but it is now overaged.

One of the numerous text based with hires vectorial graphics adventure games. That one is slighty better than the average in the graphics department, but definitively too sadistic for my tastes. The sequel, "Retour du docteur genius" is a lot better in all domains.
